Collection of Papers - 3rd International
Congress of Projectiology and Conscientiology
Convened at New York, USA, from 16th to 19th
of May 2002
The ICPC is a forum promoting debate and
exchange between researchers engaged in the study of the consciousness.
The forum is an opportunity for members
of the scientific community to present research findings and to
exchange new ideas, encouraging the synthesis of information arising
from different disciplines and the development of new theories.
Papers presented at the 3rd ICPC covered
a broad spectrum of subjects related to research and investigation
in the fields of parapsychism and paracognition as well as extraphysical
phenomena, each presented by its author(s).
Each of the contributors is a recognised
and well respected figure within their area of expertise and the
gathering of these individuals at the 3rd ICPC represents a significant
scientific event.
An outstanding point of the congress will
be the launching of the English version of the scientific treatise
"Projectiology: A Panorama of Experiences of the Consciousness
Outside the Human Body", an international reference work authored
by Waldo Vieira, M.D.
The 3rd ICPC is sponsored by the International
Institute of Projectiology and Conscientiology, a research and educative
institute whose objectives center around consciousness research
with special emphasis on the out-of-body experience as an investigative
tool.
The IIPC has sponsored a number of similar
scientific forums and events and actively stimulates debate and
discussion in the many areas of consciousness research through the
quarterly publication of the Journal of Conscientiology. Contributions
related to conscientiological studies are invited from researchers
of all disciplines and should be addressed to the Editor in accordance
with the guide included on the inside back cover.

Near-Death Experiences: on the Journey Toward Understanding
Pamela M. Kircher
ABSTRACT: Although there is controversy about
the definition of a NDE, the most common (and narrowest) definition
is that a NDE is a mystical OBE that occurs during a cardiac arrest.
NDEs that occur in the hospice setting, however, do not involve
cardiac arrest. They also differ from those that occur in acute
settings by having an increased frequency of being met by deceased
relatives, the lack of a life review, and the sense that the NDE
helps people prepare for death rather than to prepare for life.
Integration of the NDE involves assessing value changes and making
appropriate life adjustments. Research in NDEs has centered on distribution
(not related to sex, religious preference, age, or culture); veridical
perception (confirming sensory input during NDEs); value changes
and adjustment issues; and possible location of NDEs in the right
temporal lobe. Theories of the origin of NDEs are presented including
the hypoxia theory, drug theory, psychodynamic theories, and metaphysical
theories. Finally, the possible influence of NDEs and other mystical
experiences on our culture will be explored.
ECMs); en cuestiones relacionadas con cambio de valores y de ajuste;
a vida.

Lucidocracy
Luis Minero
ABSTRACT: This work introduces, from the conscientiological
point of view, the political theory of Lucidocracy, which is a government
system based on lucidity and whose main aim is to help individuals
in the accomplishment of their existential programs. The main ideas
behind Lucidocracy will be explained and the case for the need to
renew Democracy for a Lucidocracy will be argued. The balance between
keeping in line with the ideals and intentions of Lucidocracy and,
at the same time, working with a posture that is in agreement with
the current intraphysical condition is addressed; mainly, the problem
of implementing positive elements from the extraphysical dimension
into the intraphysical reality. A possible mechanism for making
a transition of systems is studied, including here a discussion
from a conventional and multidimensional perspective of the quality
and soundness of Democracy at this moment in history.

Extraordinary Dreams:
A Cross-Cultural Study
Stanley Krippner
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to identify
extraordinary dreams in a sample of 1,666 dream reports, and to
make gender comparisons as well. Research participants were members
of dream seminars that the author conducted between 1990 and 1998
in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
Only one dream report per participant was utilized, 910 dream reports
from women and 756 from men. Scoring criteria were determined in
advance for creative, lucid, healing, dreams within dreams, out-of-body,
telepathic, mutual, clairvoyant, precognitive, past-life, initiation,
and visitation dreams. In the sample of 1,666 dreams, there were
135 (8.1%) extraordinary dreams. Female dreamers reported 77 extraordinary
dreams, while male dreamers reported 58; the difference was not
statistically significant. Russia had the highest percentage of
extraordinary dream reports (12.7%), followed by Brazil (10.9%),
Argentina (9.0%), Japan (8.1%), Ukraine (5.9%), and the United States
(5.7%). When chi square statistics were applied, it was found that
Russian dreamers reported significantly more extraordinary dreams
than dreamers in Ukraine or the United States. It was concluded
that cultural factors support or suppress the incidence of extraordinary
dreams, their recall, and the willingness of dreamers to share them.
As participantes mulheres
relataram 77 sonhos extraordinários, enquanto que os participantes
homens relataram 58; a diferença não foi estatisticamente
significativa.

What the Near-Death Experience Reveals about
Consciousness
P. M. H. Atwater
ABSTRACT: As a
basic overview of near-death states and the research I have done
since 1978, I present the four types of near-death experiences I
have discovered along with the pattern of physiological and psychological
aftereffects. I do this as I explore a recent finding of Bruce Greyson,
M.D., where he found that near-death states are stress-related,
a natural response to intense trauma. By exploring his finding,
I am able to expand on the notion of stress, comparing it to the
"high stress" created intentionally in native societies
and with mystical/spiritual groups to produce states similar to
the near-death experience. I also discuss some of my own findings
about stress and the connection between the near-death episode that
results and what the experiencers feels he or she "needed"
in his or her life at that time. This brings up the question of
consciousness – are near-death experiences more a reflection
of our own deeply-held beliefs than of any heaven or hell –
which seems at least superficially to be true, until group and shared
near-death experiences are considered. Once we look at group and
shared near-death events, I offer some of my findings with child
experiencers that challenge previous research in the field of near-death
studies. My intention in doing this is to inspire others to broaden
both the range and depth of any future inquiry.
neste campo. Minha intençao com este trabalho é inspirar
outros pesquisadores a ampliar a extensão e profundidade
de qualquer investigação futura.

on near-death states, she has served two terms on the Board of the
International Association for Near-Death Studies. Her initial findings
about the aftereffects of near-death were published in Vital Signs
magazine, 1981-85, and later became "Coming Back to life: the
after-effects of the near-death experience". She has authored
several books on the subject, dedicating more than fifteen years
of intensive research and speaking with or interviewing over 3,000
near-death survivors.
Capitalist Civilization and Consciential
Evolution
Dulce Daou
ABSTRACT: In a conscientiological approach,
this paper explores the interrelationships of the material wealth,
the employment of money and its implications with the evolutionary,
multidimensional, multi-existential and holokarmic process. It investigates
the meaning of the intraphysical, materialistic existence and the
positive utilization of trade mechanisms towards the evolution of
the consciousness, as well as its restraining factors. It analyses
the possible causes of the triumph of capitalism and its function
in the intraphysical society. It proposes mechanisms for the approximation
of human relationship with capital to more mature and self-conscious
practices, for example, the achievement of evolutionary profit through
the prioritization of the existential completism – the accomplishment
of the existential program.

The Varieties of Ecstatic Experience: A
Preliminary Report from a Personal Journey
J. Timothy Green
ABSTRACT: Drawing from many authors who have
written about lucid dreaming and have noted the overlap between
near-death experiences, lucid dreams, out-of-body experiences (OBEs),
and shamanic journeys, the author argues that, because all of these
experiences are phenomenologically related, there is a need for
a single term that includes them all. He suggests the word “ecstasy"
as the most appropriate term and defines it as an experience during
which there are alterations in four basic functions: (1) perception,
(2) affection or emotion, (3) cognition and, (4) movement. Finally,
most people who experience ecstasy by whatever means report the
experience was clearly spiritual in nature. The author discusses
lucid dreams, giving examples from people he has worked with, as
well as his own experiences, OBEs that occur from the waking state
and, finally, shamanic journeys, discussing a fascinating case study
from his own practice. The author's conclusion is that direct spiritual
experiences are close to the everyday life of most people and, with
a little understanding and training, many people can learn to enter
into spiritual experiences directly, repeatedly, and in complete
safety.
a todas.
a partir do estado vígil e, finalmente, as jornadas xamânicas,
J. Timothy Green, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist
whose near-fatal accident at the age of 22 shaped his entire career.
In 1983 he published, together with Penny Friedman, one of the earliest
studies documenting people in southern California who reported near-death
experiences (NDEs). Since then, his research has grown to embrace
transpersonal psychology as well as lucid dreaming, out-of-body
experiences and shamanic journeys. More than a scholar and clinician,
Dr. Green has personally experienced many of the states of consciousness
which he discusses. He has also lectured widely, including presentations
at the annual conference of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology
and the International Association for Near-Death Studies. His articles
have appeared in the Journal of Near-Death Studies, Shaman's Drum:
The Journal of Experiential Shamanism, Sedona: The Journal of Emergence,
and Shamanism. He has lectured and presented numerous workshops
throughout the USA and was a guest on "Coast to Coast A.M.,"
Art Bell's nationally aired radio show.
Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of
Experimental Research Project into Out-of-Body Experience
Nanci Trivellato & Wagner Alegretti
ABSTRACT: This work reports some of the significant
results obtained from two OBE research experiments using opportunity
sampling to generate data. These experiments took place during two
workshops conducted in Évora – Alentejo, Portugal,
and in Segovia, Spain, respectively. The core focus of this research
project is to establish more consistent and systematic information
related to the way in which the consciousness perceives, interprets
and recalls the information learned through out-of-body experiences,
including processes such as extraphysical perception, cognition,
and memory; transference of information to the physical brain; and
the interference or influence of individual cultural and personal
background in the interpretation of perceptions. Suggestive findings
and conclusions are discussed.
discutidos.

Paracognition: Parapsychism and Creativity
Ulisses Schlosser
ABSTRACT: This work proposes paracognition as
a new scientific sub-field of conscientiology, specifically of mentalsomatics.
It also intends to identify and describe various characteristics
and possibilities of the mentalsoma and proposes to study them through
self-research. The main point is the presentation of paraphysiological
hypotheses to compose the theory of paracognitive processing. In
this way, the work assumes the task of structuring new conceptions
resulting from the correlation of many phenomena already known,
but not yet satisfactorily described. This kind of study may help
in understanding and developing creativity, pangraphy, mentalsomatic
self-research and also conscientiological pedagogy.
RESUMO: Este estudo propõe a Paracognição
autopesquisa. O principal ponto é a apresentação
de hipóteses parafisiológicas para compor a teoria
do processamento paracognitivo. Deste modo, o estudo assume a tarefa
